The Slovene (or Slovenian) language is the mother tongue to approximately 2 million people in the Republic of Slovenia, in which it is the official language. Slovene is also spoken in Austria (approx. 18,000 in Carinthia and Styria; census), Italy (approx. 100,000 in Trieste, the Province of Gorizia, Venetian Slovenia, Resia and Canale Valley), Hungary (3,190; 2001 census) and Croatia (11,800–13,100). The estimated number of Slovenian immigrants who speak Slovenian in the USA, Western Europe and Australia is approximately 400 000.
