The Slovak language is the official language of the Slovak Republic. It has approximately 5,019,950 speakers, mostly in Slovakia (4,610,000, 2001 census), the Czech Republic (193,000; 2001 census), Hungary (11,800, 2001 census), Serbia (80,000; Vojvodina, 1996, W. Brown). The Slovak language was separated from the late Proto-Slavic as a group of dialects as early as 10th century, but had not been established as a standard language until mid 19th century. Slovak uses the Latin alphabet with modifications that include some diacritical signs and diphthongs that stand for one sound.
