The Japanese language is the official language in Japan, also spoken in parts of China and Korea that were ruled by Japan for an extensive period of time, as well as in areas with numerous Japanese emigrants (USA, Brasil). There are 121,050,000 Japanese speakers in Japan (1985). There are several theories about the origin of the Japanese language, but scientists still disagree in their opinions. The most plausible theory associates Japanese with extinct languages that were used in the past in the area of the Korean peninsula and Manchuria. Due to its long development in isolation, it is difficult to find any connections between Japanese and other languages, and because of some features it is associated with the Turkish language. The Japanese language, along with the Ryukyuan languages, makes up the Japonic language family.
