The English language is a Germanic language belonging to the Indo-European language family. It developed from the language of Germanic tribes who settled in the south-eastern part of Great Britainin the late Antiquity. With the development of British colonial empire, the English language gained dominance, often also becoming the official language of colonized areas. By the number of its speakers, English is the fourth language in the world. It is also the fourth most widely spread language in the world after Chinese, Spanish and Hindu language.

It is believed that there is over 300,000,000 people to whom English is a mother tongue, around 400,000,000 people who use English as a second language, and another 100,000,000 people who use it as a foreign language. The English language plays an important role in cultural, political and economic aspects of society. It is, among other things, a language of science, aviation, computer science, diplomacy and tourism. Half of all business contracts is concluded in the English language, and two thirds of scientific documents are written in English. The English language is the official language of 45 countries, but it is also spoken in many other countries.
