The Dutch language, erroneously also called Hollands, after the Dutch region of Holland, whose dialects served to develop the standard Dutch language (Low German standard language) belongs, much like the German language, to the Germanic branch of Indo-European languages. The Dutch language is mainly spoken in the Netherlands, Belgium and some current and former Dutch colonies. A variety of Dutch spoken in Belgium is sometimes referred to as Flemmish. The Dutch language is the official language in the following countries: the Netherlands 16,400,000 (2007 CBS); Aruba 5,290; Belgium 4,620,000 (1990 WA); the Netherlands Antilles 4000; and Suriname 200,000 (1997 C. DeKleine). It is also spoken in France 80,000 and in the Brazilian state of Paraná (unknown number of speakers).
