The Danish language is a language of the East Scandinavian branch belonging to a wider North Germanic group of Germanic languages, spoken by around 6,000,000 people. Danish is spoken in Denmark (5,450,000 in 2007; 5,000,000 in 1980), but also in Germany (21,000 in 2000) in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, more precisely in Schleswig (present-day Sydslesvig), in Greenland (7,830 in 1986) and Faroe islands where, in addition to Greenlandic and Faroese, Danish is the official language, and to a smaller extent in Iceland (2,250 in 2001).
