The Czech language is a national language in the Czech Republic spoken by around 9,250,000 people in the Czech Republic (census from 2001) and 40,000 people in Serbia (2006). The most numerous Czech diaspora lives in the United States of America, an estimated 500,000 people. In the remaining parts of America and in certain European countries, their number does not exceed several tens of thousands. The Czech language is specific because of a clear distinction between the written and spoken language variety used in informal and semi-formal oral communication.
