The Chinese language is a mother tongue to one fifth of the world's population. Chinese has many dialects, the most widely spread among them being Mandarin, spoken by 850 million people. Mandarin is followed by the Wu dialect, with 90 million speakers, and Cantonese, with 80 million speakers. Most of these groups are mutually unintelligible, although some of them, such as the Xiang dialect and south-western Mandarin dialect, share come common terms and a certain level of intelligibility. The standard form of spoken Chinese is standard Mandarin, based on the Beijing dialect. Standard Mandarin is also the official language of China and Taiwan, and one of the four official languages of Singapore. The Chinese language, i.e. standard Mandarin, is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.
