The Bosnian language is a standard South Slavic language mostly spoken by Bosniaks, but also by a significant number of Bosnians belonging to different ethnic groups. The Bosnian language is spoken by 2 to 2.4 million people: in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1.7-1.8 million), Serbia and Montenegro (245,000), Western Europe and North America (150.000), as well as by an undetermined number of emigrants to Turkey (some sources mention from 100,000 to 200,000 speakers). The Bosnian language uses two official scripts: Latin and Cyrillic. Bosnian belongs to a group of tone languages called pitch accent languages, characterized by the existence of two tones (rising and falling) and two vowel lengths (short and long vowel). Monosyllabic words can only have falling tone, but their vowels can be both short and long.
