The Arabic language, a macrolanguage, (30 languages), belongs to the southern branch of Semitic languages, which makes it part of the Afro-Asiatic language familyas well. Certain Arabic languages and dialects differ so much from one another that they are mutually almost completely unintelligible, especially if their speakers live in very distant areas (e.g. Marocco - Iraq). Algerian movies, which are shot, of course, in their respective dialect, need to be subtitled into standard Arabic if shown in Persian Gulfcountries. In a wider sense, the Arabic language encompasses a large number of different spoken varieties that were used during the last thousand and a half years, or that are still used today.
