The Albanian language, a macrolanguage, has been the official language of Albaniasince 1952, and it is based on the Tosk dialect. It belongs to the independent Albanian language group and it is spoken by around 2,980,000 people, 2,900,000 of them in Albania (1989), 10,000 in Greece (Nicholas, 2002) and 15,000 in Turkey (1980). It is believed the Albanian language traces its roots back to ancient Illyrian languages. Albanian languages are divided into two major groups: Tosk and Gheg. The Shkumbin River is the dividing line. To the north of the Shkumbin River, people speak Gheg, and to the south they speak Tosk. Up until communists rose to power, standard Albanian language was based on the Gheg dialect, and from 1952 onwards it has been based on Tosk. The Gheg dialect is spoken in northern Albania, Macedonia, Kosovo and parts of Montenegro. In 1968 Albanians from Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro decided to use exclusively the Tosk dialect as a standard language and language of education.
